WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOLS

 

Here are some information about the schools of our district.

  • Scuola dell’Infanzia “B. Munari”- via Ivancich – Chirignago
  • Scuola dell’Infanzia “S. Zavrel” – via Perlan – Chirignago
  • Scuola Primaria “C. Colombo” – via Bosso – Chirignago
  • Scuola Primaria “I. Povoledo” – via Asseggiano – Asseggiano
  • Scuola Primaria “S. Barbara” – via Perlan – Chirignago
  • Scuola Secondaria di primo grado “P. Calamandrei” – via dell’Edera – Chirignago

All these schools are part of Istituto Comprensivo “C. Colombo”.
Enrol your children immediately even if the school year has already started and remember that all children have the right to attend school even if they are undocumented students (UNHR, Convention on the Rights of the Children and DPR 394/99).

 

1) HOW LONG DOES ITALIAN SCHOOL LAST?

Asilo nido
Nursery school

For children up to 3 years old not compulsory

Scuola dell’Infanzia
Infant School

For children 3 to 6 years old not compulsory

Scuola Primaria
Primary School

For children 6 to 11 years old compulsory

Scuola Secondaria di 1° grado
Lower Secondary School

For children 11 to 14 years old compulsory

Scuola Secondaria di 2° grado
Upper Secondary School

For children over 14 years old Compulsory up to the age of 16

The first education stage lasts 8 years :

  • 5 years of Scuola Primaria/Primary School
  • 3 years of Scuola Secondaria di primo grado/Lower Secondary School.

Scuola Primaria: it is free but parents have to pay for the enrollment. The books are provided by the municipality; families have to buy exercise-books, pens, colours, etc.

Scuola Secondaria: it is not free, families have to pay for the enrollment and all the text-books; moreover they have to provide exercise-books, pens, colours, etc. Ask the teachers for the list of the necessary school supplies and text-books.

Scuola dell’infanzia: it is free but families have to pay for the daily food coupon.

 

2) WHAT PAPERS DO YOU NEED TO ENROL YOUR CHILDREN?

To enrol the children in our school, parents have to fill in the forms available at the school office.

This way they self-certify their children’s date of birth and all the other requested information.

Remember that to attend Lower Secondary School students must have attended Primary School.

When enrolling you have to fill in the forms referring to:

  • the choice of tempo scuola (read part 3) (only for Scuola Primaria)
  • the option referring to the lesson of Catholic Religious Education
  • the canteen ( only for those who have chosen the 40 lessons per week option in Scuola dell’Infanzia / Scuola Primaria).

Enrollment forms must be filled in and e-mailed within January /Febuary (according to the Department of Education) or handed in directly at school.

 

3) TEMPO SCUOLA

Scuola dell’Infanzia

School starts at 8.00 and finishes at 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday (40 lessons a week).

Parents can pick up their children at three different times:

  • 12.00 to 12.15 before lunch;
  • 13.15 to 13.30 after lunch;
  • 15.40 to 16.00 at the end of school activities.

Scuola Primaria

Parents can choose between two different school organizations:

  • scuola a “tempo pieno”:
    a 40-lesson week Monday to Friday from 8.15 to 4.15 with canteen;
  • scuola a “tempo normale”:
    a 32-lesson week: on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 8.15 to 4.15 . p.m., on Wednesday and Friday from 8.15 to 12.15.

Scuola Secondaria di primo grado

Parents can choose again between two options:

  • a 30-lesson week Monday to Saturday from 8.00 to 1.00 p.m.
  • A 30-lesson week Monday to Friday from 8.00 to2.00 p.m.

It is important to be always on time.

Ask immediately the time-table of your children’s class.

 

4) HOW CAN PARENTS APPLY FOR THE CANTEEN SERVICE?

Scuola Primaria provides the canteen service.

Parents are expected to pay part of the cost of lunches. The price is determined by the municipality of Venice.
It is possible to ask for a special diet for health problems (but parents must hand in a doctor’s certificate and a detailed list of food that must be avoided) or for religious reasons (parents must hand in a complete list of foods that are not permitted).
Parents must fill in the form available at school offices to apply for the school canteen.

Scuola dell’Infanzia provides a similar canteen service.

 

5) BEFORE SCHOOL CARE SERVICE

Scuola dell’Infanzia

Families with children attending Scuola dell’Infanzia Zavrel can avail themselves of the before school care service in S. Barbara.

Scuola Primaria

For families who need an extended day programme for their children , our school offers a before school care service (paid by families) but only at Scuola Primaria S. Barbara, from 7.30 to the beginning of lessons Monday to Friday.

Scuola Secondaria di primo grado

School doesn’t offer a before school care service.

 

6) SCHOOL DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

At the end of school-day, parents must wait for their children at the school-gate.

Primary school students will not be permitted to leave the building and get home alone.

Parents can designate another adult (a relative, a neighbour or other students’ parents) to take his child home but they must fill in and sign a form, submit it to the teacher and hand it in at the school office.

 

7) CATHOLIC RELIGION OR OTHER OPTIONS?

Italian schools offer lessons of Catholic Religion.

At the moment of the enrollment, parents have to decide if they want their children

  • TO ATTEND (AVVALERSI)
  • NOT TO ATTEND (NON AVVALERSI)

Catholic Religion lessons.

If parents don’t want their children to attend the lessons of this subject, they can choose two other options:

  • STUDY HALL ACTIVITIES
  • OPTIONAL SCHOOL SUBJECT

 

8) SCHOOL YEAR

The school year lasts about 9 months. It starts in the middle of September and finishes in the middle of June.

There are two long school breaks:

  • Christmas (usually from 23rd December to 6th January)
  • Easter (6 days in March or April).

Other public holidays are spread during the other months depending on the calendar organized by the Local Government.

At the beginning of the school year, families will be informed about school breaks and public holidays.

All information about school calendar will be published on the school internet site.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE

When children miss their lessons, parents must always write an absence excuse notice to the teachers. Delayed entrances and early dismissals require the same procedure. For absences of 5 days or more, a medical certification is required.

 

9) WHAT DOES STUDENTS LEARN AT SCHOOL?

Scuola dell’Infanzia

10) HOW ARE SCHOOL RESULTS EVALUATED?

Scuola dell’Infanzia

There aren’t evaluations, but teachers write a report that assesses children’s achievement and competences and it gives useful information for the admission to Scuola Primaria.

Scuola Primaria

Every school year is divided in two four-month terms: September to January and February to June.

In January and in June teachers evaluate children’s achievements and prepare a school-report that is handed in to parents.

Scuola Secondaria di primo grado

Every school year is divided in two four-month terms: September to January and February to June.

In January and in June teachers evaluate children’s achievements and prepare a school-report that is handed in to parents.

During each term teachers evaluate children thanks to oral and written tests.

 

11) TEACHERS/PARENTS MEETINGS

Teachers regularly meet parents to speak about their work , about their children’s achievements and their difficulties.

Parent-teacher collaboration is particularly important and can greatly enhance a child’s education and progress.

Every teacher can meet students’ parents to discuss children’s progress or weaknesses.

Scuola Primaria and Secondaria di primo grado organize also two afternoon meetings, usually in December and in April.

At Scuola Secondaria di primo grado, when parents must speak to their children’s teachers usually contact the Coordinatore, who organizes and monitors class activities and maintain regular contacts with families.

 

12) AND IF YOUR CHILDREN CAN’T SPEAK ITALIAN?

To help your children feel at ease in their class and learn a new language, the teachers will be supported by interpreters and cultural mediators. Moreover, at the beginning of the school year special workshops for small groups of students will be organized to learn Italian or speak it more fluently.
